The wealthy are trying to trick us into thinking we’re next, but the reality is we pay way more than our share right now, and it will get worse if I-645 passes. We have one of the most upside-down tax systems in the country right now, where working families pay a far bigger share of their income in taxes (like sales tax) than the wealthiest. Our goal with tax reform has always been to make the tax system more fair for everyone, not less. And that means making the wealthy pay what they owe in taxes, and taking the pressure off everyone else.

It’s not wasteful to ensure that our people are healthy and educated. In fact, healthy and educated people are how we keep our economy strong.

What is wasteful is letting millionaires cut taxes that fund our education system: doing so would lead to larger class sizes, higher childcare costs, and higher tuition for students. 

Here’s more of what the tax will fund: 

• quality childcare 
• updated technology in our schools, mental health counselors, and playground equipment. 
• access to doctors that President Trump took away from Washington families. 

The super-rich want us to think they will leave and we will be worse off, but that just doesn’t match the reality. It’s actually working people who are getting priced out of our state, because we can’t afford housing, or childcare, or healthcare here. 

Wealthy people maintain residences for the same reasons we do – to be close to family, their jobs, businesses, or school systems, and multiple studies prove this. Progressive taxes are how we fund and create thriving communities in Washington that people want to and love living in, including the wealthy. Tax policy alone is rarely a reason why someone uproots their entire life and family.
