It’s been a big year for gig companies like DoorDash, Instacart, and TaskRabbit. The pandemic has meant booming business and made their executives into billionaires—but they're still paying as little as $2 a job to the people who actually do the work.
These multibillion-dollar companies are exploiting a legal loophole to get away with paying what is effectively a subminimum wage for the most marginalized workers: those who rely on gig work, including people of color, immigrants, workers with disabilities, and single parents. And during the pandemic, some apps have driven already low pay even lower, squeezing workers as much as possible and pocketing the profits.
It doesn’t have to be this way. Gig workers are calling on the Seattle City Council to make the gig economy Pay Up Now by passing new laws that raise pay, protect flexibility, and provide transparency. We can’t afford to wait any longer to ensure gig workers have the economic security they need to get through this crisis and help set our city on the path to an equitable recovery going forward.
