#HapHazardPay

Take part in our online #HapHazardPay campaign to help show why essential workers need essential protections like sick days, hazard pay, and safety supplies.

1) write down on a piece of paper…

  • Your job

  • How many people you encountered today (within 6 feet)

  • How much you get paid (or whether you’re unemployed, retired, etc)

For example: “Delivery driver. Encountered 11 people. About $100 a day.”; "Software engineer. Encountered 3 people. $60,000/year”; “Restaurant server. Encountered 2 people. Unemployed.”

2) Take a selfie of yourself holding that paper.

Feel like wearing a mask in your pic? Go for it!

3) Post it with hashtag #HaphazardPay to Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter.

Even better: tag friends & family to invite them join you, and include a link to this page to spread the word call for essential protections for essential workers: https://www.workingwa.org/haphazardpay

Take the next step & send a message!

Stay-at-home orders issued to slow the spread of coronavirus have created exemptions for “essential” work that must continue during the shutdown, including grocery stores, healthcare, and agriculture, as well as gig restaurant, grocery, and package delivery apps like Instacart, DoorDash, Postmates, and Uber Eats. This work is officially “essential,” but far too many of the people doing this essential work are getting paid much less and have fewer benefits than people who can safely work at home.

Share your selfie to spread the word, then take the next step and send a message calling on your elected officials to address #HaphazardPay in our economy by ensuring that essential workers have essential protections:

  • Comprehensive paid leave that actually lets workers take time off to protect health

  • Hazard pay of $5 per delivery or per hour

  • Safety supplies like sanitizer and gloves

  • Compensation for lost income for all workers, including immigrant workers
